I was there (as I have posted a few times) . That "Playing/Wheel" sandwich might be my favorite moment . This was my 2nd show; my buddy, for whom this was his first show, saw that 78 Santa Barbara show, wish I did !

When *they invent the time machine this show will definitely be one of the first stops. Curious as to why they chose San Bernardino to open the 1977 tour? Other than the obvious Mojave Freeway to Barstow/Vegas, San Bernardino is an armpit.

The Swing did a bunch of shows in that period . Maybe they gave the acts a good deal ? My buddies saw Black Sabbath there in 75 , and it was the first stop on The Rolling Stones' first US tour in 64 .
It was a funky (in BOTH the positive, and pejorative sense of the word) spot, location to the "inland empire" attracted all sorts of "colorful" people, and for the Dead, lots of Hell's Angels .
The band had played the Shrine in LA proper, 4 months before, and would play The Forum , in Inglewood (western LA) 4 month later . Besides the money side of things, maybe they wanted to tap into a slightly different "market" for this, and the the other shows they played there .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swing_Auditorium

Swing was destroyed by a small plane on September 11th, 1981...hmmmm, September 11th...smells like the seeds of a conspiracy...
